Ospreys Cliff Hanger
New Earswick Ospreys entertained Scarborough in the over 55’s league in what turned out to be a very close and exciting encounter, at home Dave Counter, Vic Woolley Kevin Potter & Terry Bellwood were always just in the lead against B. Dickens and led 13 – 9 after fourteen ends but lost the next three ends to go one behind 13 – 14 for the first time in the match with four ends to play, they then scored a two to regain the lead but again dropped two at the next end to go one behind with two ends to play the home rink again scored another two to go into the last end one up but dropped a single for a 17 all draw. Pat Inwood, Gordon Johnson, Vic Thompson & Eric Cookson only scored three singles in the first eight ends to trail P. Corbett 2 – 10 but won the next four ends to lead 11 – 10, again they only scored one single at the next five ends to go 12 – 18 down after seventeen ends but fought back with a five at the eighteenth to be only one shot behind with three ends to play but dropped three singles for a 17 – 21 defeat.
Over on the east coast Dave Booth, Dave Toms, John Taylor & Bob Barrett sailed into a 13 - 2 lead against J. Punter after eight ends but the tide suddenly turned and they lost five of the next six ends including dropping a seven at the fourteen end to go 14 – 18 behind with seven ends to play which the two sides shared for a 18 – 22 win to Scarborough. Gordon Fratson, Peter Waddington, Dave Hutchinson & Alwyn Anderson dropped a six at the first end & were 0 – 9 down to C. Turnbull after three ends but fought back well only allowing the Scarborough rink three singles at the next fourteen ends and picking up a couple of fours along the way they led 21 – 12 with four ends to play and go on to a 23 – 15 victory. When all the scores were added up the result was a draw 75 shots each with Scarborough taking 8 points and the Ospreys 6 points.
