Two 10's for New Earswick Men and a close game for the Ladies
New Earswick (A) entertained Doncaster in the Yorkshire League
At home Andy Humphreys, Gary Jones, Ralph Tiplady & Paul Humphreys started the better against M. Harper & led 8 – 3 after seven ends but lost the next eight ends to go 8 -15 behind, but successive three’s left them only one shot behind 14 – 15 with four ends to play at which the two sides won two ends each giving Doncaster the 18 – 16 win.
Gary Stockton, Dave Kermode, Andrew Fothergill & Tony Abbot started with two singles but were 2 – 3 down after four ends against E. Costello but from this point they surged ahead winning nine of the next ten ends to lead 17 – 4 the Doncaster rink won four of the last seven ends but the Earswick ring scored the heavier picking up a five a four & a three for a 29 - 11 win.
At Doncaster Dave Sykes, Rod Walker, Mick Head & Paul Dawson only won one of the first ten ends against M. Baker but amazingly were only five shots behind at 5 – 10 & managed to level the scores at 11 all after fifteen ends each side won three of the last six ends with Doncaster just scraping home 16 – 15 John Harrison, Colin Ellis, Colin Pickup & Bill Waldie from being 3 – 5 down after six ends against D. Atkins won eight of the next nine ends to go into a 20 – 7 lead after fifteen ends and then picked up a five a three & a two in the run in for a 30 – 13 win.
New Earswick 96 10pts Doncaster 58 4pts.
The (B) team took on Harrogate.
Brian Birch, Brian Hutton, Terry Bellwood & Dick Osguthorpe restricted J. Kennedy to three singles at the first eight ends to lead 10 – 3 & from that point out scored their opponents increasing their lead to 21 – 7 after fourteen ends & sharing the the last seven ends for a 25 – 11 win. The match Between Joe Barker, Nigel Steels, Alwyn Anderson & Eric Cookson’s rink against J. Batson was very close & even with both sides picking up a four on the way to being tied at eleven all after thirteen ends the Earswick team were only one shot behind 15 – 16 with two ends to play but lost them both on the way to a 15 – 20 defeat.
At Harrogate Paul Murray, John Snowden, Bob Barrett & Brian Gray were all square with M. Eve at five all after nine ends and the two sides matched each other for most of the second half of the game but two fours to Harrogate in the second half swung the game 19 – 12 in their favour. Gordon Fratson, Dave Toms, Vic Thompson & Kevin Potter were 1 – 9 down to P. Turton after five ends but with the help of a six at sixth end were 11 – 10 up after ten ends and from this point only allowed their opponents three more singles in the rest of the match for a 29 – 13 win.
Earswick (B) 81 10pts Harrogate 63 4pts
New Earswick Ladies met Selby Ladies in the North Eastern League at Huntington Road
Sally Domville, Moira Ellis, Jenny Philpott & Norma Davies matched S. Williamson shot for shot and were only one shot behind 9 – 10 after eleven ends Earswick then scored a two to take the lead 11 – 10 Selby had the better of the next four ends and led 13 – 15 with two ends to play at which point the home rink scored a four & a single to win 18 – 15.
The other home game was a real roller coaster of a match Lynn Page, Kay Hutchinson, Margaret Pearson & Majorie Watson after dropping two four’s & two three’s were 4 - 18 down to H. Arundel after ten ends the home rink won the next four ends but dropped a single at the fifteenth to be 10 – 19 down with just three ends to play they then scored a four to make the score 14 – 19 before picking up a seven at the seventeenth to take the lead for the first time in the match 21 – 19 Selby won the last end but only a single for a 21 - 20 New Earswick win.
At Selby Doramy Bellwood, Jean Cann, Margaret Morgan & Kath Sykes were tied seven all with J. Simpson after seven ends but only scored one single at the next eight ends to go 8 – 18 behind with just three to play & went down 12 – 20. Carol Thompson, Gemma Broadhead, Irene Warrington & Monika Morgan led C. Sarvent 6 – 1 after five ends but only picked up a single up at the next five ends and dropped a three & a four to go 7 – 10 down after ten ends, they then won five of the next six ends to lead 13 – 12 with two to play but dropped singles to lose by one shot 13 – 14.
